Proverbs 3:11-12 “The Blessing of Correction”

“My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.”

Correction often pricks our pride. The suffering with it often puts us in the foulest of moods and we blame others for our problems and misery. But this verse puts a different viewpoint on suffering. The Lord may be correcting us, and as such, we should cling to the Lord. Correction is a blessing! What joy it is to know that the sovereign, almighty Father loves us so much that He wants correct us before we stray too far! We should not despise God for bringing correction into our life, but rather thank Him and praise Him for it because it will deepen our intimacy with Him if we only submit.

Proverbs 29:15 "The rod and reproof"

“The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.”

The key to effective child training is not just the ‘rod’ nor just ‘reproofs’, but both. When the rod is used, a rational, appropriate reproof should be given. This reproof clarifies the exact transgression, distinguishing good from evil. The reproof also provides instruction from the parent to the child. In this way, the child gains wisdom. The purpose of the rod is to administer required punishment for the transgression, bring the child to repentance, and provide opportunity for the reproof. One word of caution: Do not discipline your child in anger or express disgust with him. The unwise parent who displays these attitudes will prevent an environment for proper training and will not win the heart of their child.
